Currency transportation across the customs border

Crossing the customs border of Ukraine with a significant amount of money may require the declaration of currency, and in some cases, obtaining the relevant permission for their transportation. According to Ukrainian legislation, individuals can carry cash currency or its equivalent up to 10,000 euros across the border without official declaration (through oral declaration). When crossing the border with amounts exceeding 10,000 euros, they must be declared to the customs authorities.

How to transport money across the border? How to formalize the export of currency through customs? What documents are needed for exporting money across the border?

These are common questions and consultation topics for our clients with a customs lawyer.

Transporting currency (money) and valuables across the customs border is done through customs clearance and declaration.

Written declaration is a customs clearance procedure if the amount of Ukrainian currency, foreign currency, and bank metals exceeds the equivalent of 10,000 euros. Additionally, Ukrainian citizens, when moving currency valuables by exporting/sending them beyond Ukraine in a total amount exceeding the equivalent of 10,000 euros per day, are subject to written declaration.

During written declaration of currency valuables, evidence (documents) of their lawful acquisition must be provided. Such evidence may include:

  • Documents showing cash withdrawal from personal accounts in banks.
  • Or receipts for currency exchange transactions with this cash (in case such a transaction is carried out).
  • Documents confirming the purchase of bank metals by the individual in banks and/or the National Bank of Ukraine.
  • Other documents confirming the legality of obtaining the currency.

Confiscation and seizure of currency (money) by customs

Very often, citizens crossing the customs border of Ukraine treat the customs clearance of currency valuables negligently.

Failure to declare and concealment of currency from customs control, the amount of which exceeds the equivalent of 10,000 euros, leads to a fine of 20 percent of the excess amount and confiscation of the exceeded sum.

In case of problematic issues with transporting currency across the customs border of Ukraine, it is recommended to seek assistance from a customs lawyer or a lawyer specializing in customs procedures.

A customs lawyer in Odessa will provide detailed consultation on the transportation of currency valuables, assist in correctly completing all necessary documents to avoid problems with customs authorities.
